Boone Givea Hia torv, Both Past and Praa ent, of our County Scat Judge Win borne, iu liiu excel* leut History of Heitford County, ssya tlmt Hertford was formed iu 1758 out of portions of Bertie, CUowhu sad Northampton Coo ti tles. It thus sppears that Chows u] County embraced land, at that time, ou the South side of,the Chowan River. Iu 1768 a bill in the Suite Legislature was passed to lo cate a town on the lauds of Ben jamin W.ynn, where the town of Wiuton now stands. It was the first ' incorporated town in the County, | and stood alone iu that respect for at leut twenty (20) years. Ben jamin Wyuu donated 150 acres of land and the new town was named iu bis honor. It would appear that the name ought to have been Wynuton. The County Seat of Hertford is situated on a bluff on the South aide tbe beantiful Chowan River, and iu maoy reaped is an ideal lo cation^ It ia readily seen that 148 years 'Irnve passed since Winton j was laid out by Commisionera ap pointed for tbe purpose, aided by Benjamiu Wynn. who gave tbe . laud. Du-injf the Revolutionary , War Hardy Mnrfee, a gallant and distinguished office-, wrote to the authorities from Winton, concern ing matters pertaining to tlie op eration of the army in this section of tbe State, in which be speaks of I indings on the Meherrin River, without mentioning the name of I [i any town. The location of Winton has ad - vantages and to tbe contrary not a few. The drainage is unexcell ed. but there are hindrances to growth which are not germauetp ' this sketch. ? Tbe Court House, which of course was located here, has been burned three times since the town bu had a local habitation and a name. In 1862. after tbe fall of Roanoke Island. Federal gun boats came here and burned the Court House, with all records excepts few that were in lHurfreesbonv and left only one house standing in the town. They literally wiped ?tut the town, and left oiil v one I bouse to tell where Winton hid I stood. 1 A few years after the war I tad closed another Court House was buitt, modeled after the old, wH.li many of its. defects and mi im porvements upon the old building. It is only in recent years that the improvements upou the old build ing were finished, which has made the present structure more homely and convenient. TIm growth of Winton has been slow, but there has been a change for better during the pnst twenty five years. Thirty five years ago there was not a deceot church building in the town. Now there are* two' Baptist Churches, known as the Winton Baptist Church and Chowan, and one Methodist, and one Epsicopal Church: and just outside the corprate limits two colored Baptist Churches. For many years there was not a school building in the town, not so much a place suitable for wbal wa* called the free school. The first floor of the Masonic Hall furnished the borne for a school of any aspirants for higher education. Now there is a large school build ing for the Winton High School with Robt E. Williams, a grad uate of Wake Forest College, as principal. He is assisted by Misses Council. Cockernam, and Lawrence, in the grades; while ' Mrs. J. C. Newsome has charge of the music. There are at least fifteen stores in the town, w hose proprietors ought to carry advertisements in the Herald, and whose names are not mentioned, as I am unwilling for the Herald to give tjiem a notice without prices. The people of Winton are just ly proud of their two banks, vie: Merchants and Farmers Bank and the Bank of Winton. Both of tbem occupy handsome and up to date buildings, and are worthy of the confidence lbeir natrons have in them. When visitors come to Winton tbey may be sure of a hearty wel come and good 'are at the two hotels, to-wit, Jordan and Parker and Hmes House. . There iatan eldfctric plant, own ed by theHOorporation, and all of the churchee/Oourt House, stores and me.nyot.tbe the ftrivate dwell ings enjoy the pleasure ana com fort of lights not made kero Tl. due to congregation of the Chowan Church to add that they hare four comfortable Sim day school rooms, yJFl (Continued WSSfcu <f') WIMTON HAS. ?
